Message from Director Don Vogel

First let me say how grateful I’m for having the opportunity to serve on your Christmas Lake Board of Directors for these past 6 years.  Many long hours of hard work have been spent by many directors and concerned property owners over issues more varied than time or space permits.

Second, you can be assured that every Director I have worked with during this tenure has ONLY been concerned with making decisions that are in the overall best interest of all CLV property owners.  And many have put in hundreds of hours of volunteer service.

Third, all of our CLV employees are extremely committed to doing the very best job for all our benefit.  Recent interviews with every employee told us every employee likes their job and the people they serve.  To each of them I say “Thank you for making my job so much easier.”

Special recognition is earned and much deserved for our Property Manager, Mark Kroeger.  Sure it’s easy to criticize him when you only see one decision he makes and don’t agree with that decision.  But let me assure you he has a passion and commitment to his job that is not often found in most organizations.  He agonizes over many tough decisions to be sure he is doing the right thing for all persons involved in those decisions.  The breadth and scope of issues he is involved with are beyond description.  Give him your words of encouragement.  We are blessed to have him as our Property Manager.

Fourth, I challenge each of you to get more involved in the decision making and volunteer service to continue to make Christmas Lake Village the best place to live in Indiana.  We need more than just 9 directors to make those decisions.  Opportunities are open to serve on various committees where key decisions are made – Budgets, Roads and Infrastructure, Rules and Regulations, Parks and Recreation, and most certainly our key tradition The Festival of Lights.

I’m not sure how many of you realize the value CLV provides for your annual assessment. First, let me assure you after evaluating many similar, private, gated communities – CLV assessments are way below any comparable communities anywhere.  For example, Doe Valley in rural KY has similar amenities to ours (lake, golf, tennis, parks, etc.) and similar in number of lots, 2055 to our 2115.  Their assessment is $86.50 per month ($1038 annually per lot vs. our $367.50 annually).  It takes everyone paying their fair share to keep providing the service you expect. Our home prices have remained very steady despite all the horror stories affecting many parts of our nation AND you get more home for your money in CLV than in almost every other part of the country.  Realtors have recently told me home sales are once again gaining momentum after a slow spell last year.

In closing, our “Wish List” is long in services and benefits your Board would like to be able to provide in the future.  Hopefully most will come to fruition but with sound fiscal responsibility much of it will come more slowly than we would like.  But remember, this is YOUR Christmas Lake Village – a great place to call home.

Thank You again for the privilege to serve.

Don Vogel

President, CLV Board of Directors

New Policies for CLV Brush Chipping Program

On April 9, 2009 the Christmas Lake Board of Directors adopted a new brush chipping policy effective immediately.  The policy was based on residents’ feedback and Village personnel’s experience with brush removal.  Below are highlights from the adopted policy.  A copy of the policy may be obtained at either the gatehouse or on the website.

Throughout the year there will be two scheduled debris pick-ups; in the spring and fall.  Residents should refer to the marquee and website regarding when the chipper will be in their neighborhood.

Storm damage assistance will be offered if requested within 48 hours of the end of the storm and if the National Weather Service has declared a severe storm or tornado warning.

There will be a designated drop off site for Christmas trees each year.  Trees must be dropped off no later than January 31 and must be bare of ornaments and plastic covering.  Again, watch the website and marquee for notice of the drop off site.

There will be no charge for the first 15 minutes of debris cleaning at your residence.  However, each additional 15 minutes will be charged $25.

The maximum stack height is 4 feet and the maximum size will be 6 inches in diameter.  It is easier for the workers to chip on 15 foot long branch than three 5 foot long pieces.  Place the butt ends toward the road.

The primary use for the chipper is for right of way maintenance.  Clearing the road will take storm damage priority.

Christmas Lake Village Garden Club News

“And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow.”  -- G.K. Chesterton

Without the rain there would be no gorgeous flowers, green plants, and the Christmas Lake Garden Club!

The garden club will be meeting June 15 for a garden tour of four Christmas Lake Village Resident’s home gardens.  Members will tour Ann Vogel, Diane Allen, Geri Hauser and Karen Hayes’ gardens.  Lunch will be served at Karen Hayes home following the tour.  Hostesses for this event are JoAnne Rinehart and Cathy Cannon.

On July 20 the club will be taking a tour of the therapeutic gardens at New Harmony, Indiana.  Hostesses for this meeting are Faye Rupprecht and Mary Ellen Morgan.

Tim Griffith from Wild Birds Unlimited will be presenting a program at Santa’s Lodge on Landscaping with Native Wildflowers and Grasses on August 17.  Ann Vogel will be the hostess.

The club will once again hold their annual mum sale in September.  Watch the marquee at the front gate, website and the September newsletter for more information.  Preorders are encouraged and the mums will sale for $7 per gallon bucket.

The Garden Club is open to new members.  For more information about any of the above meetings or on how to become a member, please contact club president, Karen Hayes at 544-2960.

CLV Beach Opens; Meet New Lifeguards

Christmas Lake Village has hired four lifeguards for the 2009 swimming season.  These lifeguards will patrol the Recreation Center Beach Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The four people hired for this season had to complete a six day certification program and pay $185 for their lifeguard certification.  Each person attended classes on Saturday s from 12 to 6 p.m. over a six week period.

This year’s lifeguards are all Heritage Hills High School students.  They are Randi Fields, Stephanie Sickbert, Chelsea Tabor, and Chris Walker.

Randi will be a senior this fall at HHHS.  She moved to CLV from Ohio and she enjoys shopping, playing video games and “chilling out at the Rec. Center.”

Growing up in Southern Indiana, Stephanie will start her junior year at HHHS this fall.  Stephanie enjoys boating on the lake, playing slow pitch softball and hanging out with friends.

For the enjoyment of all, remember to obey the rules of the beach and listen to the lifeguards.  If spending time at the beach understand that 15 minute breaks are mandatory and must be observed when lifeguards announce them.  Also, no dogs are allowed on the beach as well as bad language.  Both can be left at home.

Mark Your Calendars for September Garage Sale

It is time to clean out the garage and storage areas to prepare for the village wide garage sale on September 19.  Look for more information at the July board meeting.  The times and format will remain similar to last year.  Details to follow!

Board Looks to Lower Big Lake this Fall

The Board of Directors is considering lowering the lake levels this fall in an effort to kill off some of the unwanted vegetation.

Property Manager Mark Kroeger said to watch the marquee and website for notices for upcoming meetings regarding the lowering of the lake.  The board wants village resident’s feedback regarding this issue.

“The primary reason we are considering this is to kill weeds off without putting out poisons,” Kroeger stated.  “We spend around $15 thousand to $20 thousand per year” treating the lake for weeds and grasses.

“We would lower the lake ½ to 2/3 of its total volume.  The idea behind this is to expose seeds of lake grasses and weeds that will freeze over the winter time,” Kroeger said.  “If we do it we will start in early November.”

Many factors would affect whether the board would proceed with the drawdown or not.  If this winter is forecast as being unusually warm or it looks like next spring will be unusually dry the board would not proceed.

Research has shown the lake drawdown is an effective way of controlling pondweeds and grasses.

If the village lowers the lake levels, residents with lakefront property could make dock repairs; maintenance could replace riprap, patches and make needed repairs

Christmas Lake Golf Course News

If you are seeking some exercise this summer, look no farther than 18 holes at Christmas Lake Golf Course or a swim in the pool at the clubhouse.

There are several ongoing leagues throughout the summer months.  The Ladies nine and 18 hole leagues will play each Tuesday.  Every Wednesday will be the 9 hole Ladies Scramble.   The Men’s Senior League will play every Thursday morning and the Couple’s League will play every Friday evening.

Several local organizations rely on Scrambles at Christmas Lake Golf Course as their big fundraisers for the year.  “Outings that do the best are the ones who sell hole sponsorships to organizations,” said club pro Tom Nelson.

“Outings are up a little from last year,” commented Nelson.  “We are pretty busy from an outing standpoint but there are still plenty of times for folks to get out there.”

Some of the highlighted outings are the Spencer County Democrat Scramble on June 8, the Men’s Club Championship on June 13, the Indiana Republican Outing on June 16, the United Methodist Campground Fundraiser on June 18, the Chateau Scramble on July 12, the Spencer County Camper of Commerce Outing on July 16 and the Evergreen Open Two Lady Scramble on August 4.

A Message from Property Manager Mark Kroeger

We are on the verge of summer once again.  Lifeguards are on the beach, though we have reduced the operating hours there to Wednesday through Sunday.  The beach is closed on Monday and Tuesday.  The lifeguards are there for your safety.  Please abide by their directions and the posted rules.  In consideration of nearby residents, all outdoor activity in the beach and shelter house area must cease by 10:00 PM.

Drivers…watch for walkers/joggers.  The weather is getting better and the numbers are increasing.  We have to share the roadways.  Watch the color of clothing you wear as a walker/jogger.  Reflective vests are available to purchase.

The Fiber Optic network installation is going well, although a little slow at this time due to the weather.  We still expect to see the cabling installed by late this year.  Remember that each house will have a new cable run to it.  Next spring representatives of PSC will make an appointment to do a bit of work inside the house to make the system functional.  The changeover to the new cable is scheduled for sometime next spring

The Association is NOT chipping limbs or branches at this time.  We expect the next scheduled pick will be sometime in October for yard debris.  We will keep you all advised of the dates.  In the meantime, please do not place any more chipping at the road’s edge.  We are seeing the number of piles increasing.  I am advised that there is a place to dump branches etc at the County dump site in Chrisney.

School has been out but a week or so, and we are already experiencing some
difficulties at the beach after dark. So far, this has primarily been
damage to grass and turf by kids driving their vehicles where they should
not be driven. Some of these have been kids that live here. Some of this
has been done by their invited guests. Please be reminded that all members
are responsible for the actions of their guests. If we are able to catch
offenders, either the member or the guest will pay for needed repairs.
Guests who damage Association or common property may be banned from the
Village. Recreation Center rules call for all outdoor activity in the area
to cease at 10:00 PM, so we will be clearing the area nightly at that time.

LBDA Presents Lincoln – A New Theatrical Experience

The world premiere of the much anticipated story of President Abraham Lincoln’s life is coming to the Lincoln Amphitheatre on June 12, 2009.

After three years of being dark, the amphitheatre will once again shine its lights and showcase some of the country’s top talent in a story that describes Lincoln’s life from his earliest years and families struggles to when he became the 16th president of our nation.

The Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association (LBDA) started in 1977 but has since been reorganized and made it their goal to revitalize the amphitheatre and put forth a quality show about the president’s life.  The LBDA commissioned Ken Jones to write this debut production.  Mr. Jones is an award winning playwright and screenwriter with over 400 productions of his 22 plays.  Professional theatres have produced his plays across the United States, Europe and Canada.

Several big names in the entertainment industry have been tapped to lead this production.  Steve Wright was brought on as the Executive Producer and R. Scott Lank is the Artistic Director.  Veteran TV and Broadway actor Geoffrey Wade was brought on to play Abraham Lincoln and Emmy award winning actor Nikkieli DeMone will star as Frederick Douglas.

Included with the price of your ticket will be an Amish family style meal catered by Black Buggy restaurant, pioneer games for children and adults, free concessions during intermissions(drinks and popcorn), experiencing the Lincoln Life Experience exhibit, Scenic Walking Tours, and artisans on site playing period music, demonstrating spinning, weaving, and other pioneer tasks.

Tickets may be purchased on lincolnamphitheatre.com anytime.  You can also purchase tickets by calling Lincoln Amphitheatre, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. C.S.T.  Group tickets can be purchased at a discounted price for 15 or more people.  Tickets run between $42.95 and $29.95.  The show will run from June 12 through August 15 with the amphitheatre open six days a week; Tuesday through Sunday.
