Mark Your Calendars for September Garage Sale

One person’ junk is another person’s treasure and what better way to get rid of some “junk” and find some “treasure” than at the annual CLV Garage sale.

The Christmas Lake Village garage sale will be held Saturday, September 19th from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. CDT.  The gates to the public will close at 2 p.m. but those already inside CLV may stay until finished shopping.

In addition this year, four roads will be converted to one-way only for the duration of the garage sale.  These four roads are Blue Spruce, Ornament Lane (with sections of Sled Run as well), Sleigh Bell, and the Snowball/Melody Drive loop.

As in past years, the Santa Claus Optimist Club will be selling food and garage sale items at the Recreation Center throughout the day as well.

A map/flyer showing directions to all the participating homes will be given to any who ask.  Please reserve your place on the list by completing the online registration on the CLV website NO LATER THAN 4:30 PM on Friday September 11, 2009.  Late registrations or payments will not be included in the map.

A $5.00 fee for newspaper advertising and to cover expenses is to be paid by this date as well.  The fee can be paid to the gate officer 24 hours a day.

A Message from Property Manager Mark Kroeger

Other than changes in the weather and attendance, and a few logistics challenges, the Festival of Lights has not seen a lot of change since its inception in 1985.

However, starting this year a change in the Festival and a change in the Town’s activities will be noticeably different. Some of the planned activities are 5 weekends of craft shows starting in November, Christmas dinners at the Lodge along with lighting the big Christmas tree, contests, and light tours through Lake Rudolph.

The biggest change to the Village will be that the Festival of Lights will be held on two consecutive Saturdays. Those dates for this year will be December the 12th and 19th. The gates will be open from 5:00-9:00 CST. There will be no Festival of Lights on Sundays. We will be accepting cash and food donations at the gate and at the Recreation Center, both of which will go to charities.

That said we do not anticipate changing the route from 2008. A map showing the route is on display in the gatehouse. We would highly encourage those on the route to start considering their decorations now. Other events in the Town are expected to bring larger crowds to the area. We want CLV to shine brightly as well.

On another subject, the Board continues to look closely at lowering Christmas Lake approximately 6 feet over the winter starting about November 1st. This decision is an agenda item and will be made at the September Board of Directors meeting on September 10th. The meeting is at 6:00 PM at the Recreation Center.

We have had this topic on the agenda for several months. There is some evidence that the freezing weather will help us with our lake weed issues. Additionally, we can do some projects i.e. work on boat docks, make minor repairs to the tower, and dig out silt at some of the boat dock areas. Some lake front members have voiced their desire to work on their own docks as well. We also have heard some negative comments about this procedure.

All members are invited to attend this meeting.

A Message from Director Mark Smith

I bought my house on the Southwest finger of the big lake -- a real "fixer-upper"-- on something of an impulse.  I was going through a divorce.  I was feeling displaced and needed a place for my young son, Tyler, and I to call home.  It turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Although we technically live in Louisville, the Village is the place Tyler and I consider home. We spend almost every weekend there with our two dogs, Bruno (a lovable lab-border collie mix) and Tike (a small terrier and Tyler's best friend).

While the Village is an almost ideal place to raise a child, there is an issue of deep concern to me:  speeding.

I regularly see vehicles going by my home on West Melchior South at a rate of at least 60 miles per hour.  When I drive through the Village at the speed limit of 25, some pass me in a reckless manner.  I know this happens all over the Village.  It must stop.  It is endangering our children.

Thankfully, the Board recently made a decision asking the town police to step up enforcement and begin issuing tickets; no more warnings. We will also look at new ways to raise awareness and develop consequences for those who speed through the Village.
A few minutes to you could mean the life of a child.  None of us want that.

Please, the next time you think about exceeding the 25 mph speed limit, think of our kids.  If things do not change, I fear we are heading toward a tragedy.  Together, we can prevent that, making our community both a great and safe place.

Christmas Lake Village Garden Club September 2009

The gorgeous colors of fall are upon us and what better way to add some of that color to your yard than with some bright mums.  The CLV Garden Club will be holding their annual mum sale on September 11 at the front gate parking area.

The garden club encourages everyone to preorder their mums to assure they get the amount and colors desired.  The club will be selling $7 gallon buckets of white, lavender, bronze, red and yellow.  Support your local garden club with this endeavor as it is their largest fundraiser of the year.

On September 21 the garden club will be touring the Mesker Zoo and Botanical Gardens.  Carolyn Cunningham is hostess for this event.

The Southwest District Garden Club of Indiana will convene in Boonville on October 8.  Many members from the CLV club will be attending this function.

The October 19 meeting will be led by Master Gardner and Southwest District President Julie Mallory.  She will be speaking on “Gardening to improve your property value”.  Nancy Ringeman and Karen Hayes will be hostesses.

Santa’s Elves will visit on November 9 to speak on their mission of sending out letters to Santa.  For several years, the CLV Garden Club has helped in this endeavor by volunteering their time to reply to children’s letter to Santa.  The club members will also be preparing a Christmas craft.  This meeting is hosted by Dottie Keefe and Joyce Robinson.

The CLV Garden Club meets at 11 a.m. on the 3rd Monday of each month at Santa’s Lodge.  Guests and spouses of members are always welcome.  The program takes place first with the meal following.  For more information about any of the above meetings or on how to become a member, please contact club president, Karen Hayes at 544-2960.

Lake Drawdown Decision to be made

The CLV Board of Director’s seeks residents input on the question of lowering the lake.  This issue has been discussed for the last several months at regular board meetings and a decision will be made either at the September or October meetings.

Research has shown the lake drawdown is an effective way of controlling pondweeds and grasses.  Lowering the lake would also give lakefront property owners a chance to repair docks and retaining walls.  The village would also be able to make repairs to the drawdown tower and dig out some of the finger areas of the lakes.

Assuming weather conditions allow the drawdown would begin around the November 1 and take over 50 days to lower to sufficient levels to expose weeds and grasses.
